Established in 1816, Lagavulin Distillery, owned by Diageo, is nestled in the village of Lagavulin on Islay's south coast. Revered by whisky enthusiasts, Lagavulin often serves as the gateway to a lifelong passion for whisky, steeped in history and mystique. The name "Lagavulin" is derived from the Scottish Gaelic "Lag a¡¯ Mhuilinn," meaning "hollow of the mill."
The 2021 Special Release, curated by Master Blender Dr. Craig Wilson, showcases the diverse and legendary distilleries of Scotland, bringing to life the mythical creatures said to guard these remote locations. This annual collection, featuring detailed illustrations by renowned digital artist Ken Taylor, celebrates Scotland's hidden whisky treasures, from lochs to rugged highlands.
Through an on-pack QR code, enthusiasts can immerse themselves in a multi-sensory, mixed reality tasting experience, offering a taste of Scotland from the comfort of home.
This Lagavulin expression, aged for a minimum of 12 years in refilled American oak barrels, is unadulterated by coloring, chill-filtration, or finishing. Described as the distillery's "fiercest and smokiest" casks, it is bottled at a robust 56.5% ABV in limited quantities.
Tasting Notes:
Nose: Aromatic and clean, with maritime notes of sea air, salt, and minerals, complemented by dark chocolate, seaweed, and lemon zest. Subtle fruity sweetness is balanced by wood smoke and bonfire embers.
Palate: Oily and mouth-coating, with flavors of lemon citrus, sea salt, and barrel char. Smooth and well-balanced.
Finish: Long and smoky, with fresh chili, black peppercorns, and lemon acidity.
