I still recall my first meeting with Temptress. It was back in either 2008 or 2009 – not long after the beer had first been released by Holgate, anyway – at a food pairing event hosted by their then head brewer Ian Morgan at the RACV Club in Melbourne's CBD. Still making my first tentative steps from enjoyer of good beer to someone trying to know a bit more about it, I had doubts that a beer could be suitable for a dessert pairing (how little I knew...), only to be put in my place rather swiftly.
The beer has since gone on to become a staple for the brewery, one of few such dark beers you can find at any time of the year, and spawned the imperial Empress offshoot too. Revisiting Temptress as it gets a limited release in cans ahead of winter 2025, it's still surprising just how luscious it is – like an early GABS beer before GABS even existed. Velvety and very much suited to dessert, it's a swirling mass of chocolate, caramel, nougat, and a figgy, dark fruitiness, with hints of vanilla, roast and Nutella in the mix too.
Come to think of it, you probably don't even need dessert. Just a can of Temptress.
