They’ve always had a passion for classics at Holgate Brewhouse, so when we hit that time of year when lagers and lederhosen become extra cool, they’re not exactly going to miss out. Ahead of Oktoberfest kicking off in Germany, and the many local events we’ll see over the next six weeks or so, the Woodend brewers have released a classic dark lager: a Schwarzbier.
Sure, it might be made in Australia by Australians, but ignore those crucial details and you’ve got a beer that doesn’t get much more German. Made entirely with Bavarian malt, the dark lager stays equally traditional thanks to Tettnang hops, and of course, it’s brewed on Holgate’s Braukon system. Fill your stein with the Schwarz (a regular glass will do too!) and you’ll find it pours jet black, filled with dark chocolate, roasted and herbal characters. A decent bitterness and lean finish make it an incredibly easy-drinking black beer (ignore that earlier advice: get yourself that stein).
