The 2023 Yarra Yering Chardonnay is a benchmark expression of cool-climate elegance and precision from one of the Yarra Valley’s most celebrated producers. In this limited magnum format, it offers an extended ageing potential and a more gradual evolution in bottle, revealing layers of texture and complexity over time.
Vineyard and Winemaking
Sourced from Yarra Yering’s historic estate vineyards at the foot of the Warramate Hills, the fruit benefits from gravelly, free-draining soils and a cool, elevated site that preserves natural acidity. Whole-bunch pressed juice was fermented in French oak barriques, a small proportion of which were new, with partial malolactic fermentation to add depth and roundness while maintaining purity. Lees stirring over 10 months contributed texture and complexity.
Tasting Notes
Aromas of white peach, nectarine, and lemon zest intertwine with hints of hazelnut, brioche, and struck flint. The palate is fine and tightly coiled, showing crystalline citrus and stone fruit, balanced by chalky minerality and gentle oak spice. A line of vivid acidity drives a long, seamless finish, showcasing both finesse and power.
Style and Character
This Chardonnay captures the precision and restraint of modern Yarra Yering winemaking, combining fruit purity with subtle oak influence and beautifully balanced texture. In magnum, its slow development will further enhance complexity and harmony.
Cellaring and Pairing
Superb now for its tension and freshness, but will cellar gracefully for 8–12 years. Perfect alongside roast chicken, grilled scallops, creamy seafood dishes, or fine cheeses, where its poise and structure can truly shine.
