The 2023 Wendouree Malbec is a powerful, traditionally styled Clare Valley red that exemplifies Wendouree’s uncompromising approach to structure, longevity, and authenticity. Produced by the legendary Wendouree, this wine is unapologetically built for the cellar, prioritising tannin framework and savoury depth over early accessibility.
Sourced from Wendouree’s low-yielding estate vineyards in the Clare Valley, the fruit benefits from the region’s elevation, cool nights, and ironstone-rich soils, all of which contribute to firm tannins, natural acidity, and slow, even ripening. The 2023 vintage delivered fruit of excellent balance and concentration, reinforcing the wine’s serious, age-worthy profile.
In the winery, winemaking followed Wendouree’s firmly traditional methods. Fermentation and extraction were handled to emphasise structure and longevity, with maturation taking place in seasoned oak to avoid overt wood influence. As with all Wendouree wines, the Malbec was bottled without fining or filtration, preserving its raw intensity and capacity for long-term evolution.
In its youth, the wine is dense and tightly wound, showing aromas of dark plum, blackberry, and mulberry, layered with notes of earth, ironstone, dried herbs, and savoury spice. The palate is medium- to full-bodied and firmly built, with pronounced tannins, deep savoury character, and a long, drying finish that clearly signals its need for time in the cellar.
While extended decanting can offer an early glimpse of its depth, the 2023 Wendouree Malbec is best cellared and will reward patience over 15–25+ years, evolving into a complex, savoury, and deeply characterful wine.
