The 2023 Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz continues a legacy that began in 1959, offering a pure and generous expression of warm-climate Australian Shiraz. Traditionally associated with the Kalimna vineyard in the Barossa Valley, Bin 28 has evolved into a showcase of Penfolds’ multi-regional blending mastery, delivering depth, richness and consistency year after year. The 2023 vintage reflects this approach with vibrant fruit, plush texture and impeccably handled oak.
The 2023 season across South Australia was relatively mild, with cooler conditions and extended ripening windows in many key districts. These conditions produced Shiraz with excellent colour, lifted aromatics and beautifully balanced acidity — qualities that elevate the Bin 28 style in this vintage.
The bouquet is expressive and fruit-driven, opening with aromas of blackberry, black plum, blueberry and raspberry coulis. Notes of licorice, dark chocolate, baking spices and mocha add Penfolds’ signature richness. Subtle hints of vanilla, cedar and warm earth reflect maturation in seasoned American oak, contributing structure without overshadowing the fruit.
On the palate, the 2023 Bin 28 is medium to full-bodied and gorgeously textured. Ripe dark fruits glide across a supple, velvety frame, supported by soft, integrated tannins that provide shape and balance. Layers of cocoa, anise, spice and lightly toasted oak offer depth, while a fresh line of acidity keeps the wine lively and energetic. The finish is smooth, generous and satisfying, making this vintage especially approachable in its youth.
