About This Wine
Les Monts Damnés is located in Chavignol, in the western portion of the Sancerre appellation in the Loire Valley. The vineyard sits on steep slopes composed of terres blanches — chalk subsoils with thin clay and limestone topsoil, the same geological vein found in Chablis.
The Cotat family has tended vines on the slopes of Monts Damnés since the end of World War II. Vines average over 30 years of age.
These wines are known for marrying plush richness with laser-like cut and energy, and are capable of long-term ageing.
About the Producer
Pascal Cotat is one of the leading domaines of Sancerre, producing traditional Sauvignon Blanc aged in oak. The domaine farms approximately 2.5 hectares of vineyards in Chavignol, including Les Monts Damnés and La Grande Côte.
The estate emerged in the 1990s when Pascal and his cousin François Cotat divided the family holdings following regulatory changes affecting independent producers. Production remains extremely limited and highly sought after.
Viticulture & Winemaking
Fruit is harvested by hand and often picked late to achieve full ripeness. Fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts after whole-bunch pressing. The wine is barrel-fermented in older demi-muids and aged in larger tonneaux. Viticulture follows largely organic principles though the estate is not certified.
