Crafted as part of Diageo’s Special Releases 2023 collection, Mortlach ‘The Katana’s Edge’ pays tribute to the legendary precision and power of the Japanese katana sword. This distinctive Speyside single malt was finished in a unique combination of ex-Kanosuke Japanese whisky and ex-Pinot Noir casks, adding exotic character to Mortlach’s signature bold, meaty spirit.
On the nose, expect layers of dried cherry, dark plum, and earthy spice, lifted by hints of cedar, sandalwood, and roasted nuts. The palate is rich and complex, unfolding with dark chocolate, black tea, grilled peach, savoury umami, and warming spice, framed by the distillery’s signature full-bodied texture. The influence of Japanese casks brings elegance and a slightly sweet, incense-like note. The finish is long, dry, and spicy, with a touch of red fruit and toasted oak.
