The 2023 Kaesler Alte Reben Shiraz is the flagship Shiraz of Kaesler Wines, crafted from some of the oldest surviving Shiraz vines in the Barossa Valley. “Alte Reben,” meaning “old vines” in German, pays tribute to the estate’s extraordinary vineyard heritage, with vines dating back to the late 19th century and delivering fruit of remarkable concentration, depth, and complexity.
The 2023 vintage provided excellent growing conditions across the Barossa Valley, allowing for slow, even ripening and exceptional flavour intensity while maintaining balance and freshness. The ancient dry-grown vines naturally produce very low yields, resulting in a wine of profound structure and old-vine character.
In the winery, fruit was fermented in small open fermenters with careful extraction to preserve texture and detail. Maturation took place in premium French oak barrels, including a significant proportion of new oak, adding structure, spice, and complexity while integrating seamlessly with the fruit.
The wine opens with an intensely layered bouquet of blackberry, dark plum, blueberry, and black cherry, intertwined with notes of dark chocolate, liquorice, espresso, exotic spice, and subtle earth. The palate is full-bodied and richly textured, with dense dark fruit concentration, velvety tannins, and exceptional length. Despite its power, the wine retains precision and composure, reflecting both old-vine pedigree and meticulous winemaking.
Approachable now with extended decanting, the 2023 Alte Reben Shiraz is built for long-term cellaring and will reward patience over 20–30+ years, evolving further savoury complexity and tertiary depth.
