The 2023 Greenock Creek Mataro is a vibrant, expressive release that highlights the estate’s deep Barossa Valley heritage and its ability to craft powerful yet characterful single-varietal wines. While Greenock Creek is world-renowned for its monumental Shiraz, its Mataro (Mourvèdre) continues to impress with its authenticity, savoury complexity and unmistakable sense of place.
Sourced from low-yielding vineyards across the western Barossa, the 2023 vintage benefited from a long, mild growing season. Conditions allowed Mataro — a naturally late-ripening variety — to develop ripe tannins, deep colour and fragrant spice while retaining freshness and aromatic lift. The result is a wine that balances Barossa richness with varietal definition and structure.
The wine opens with dark, brooding aromas of blackberry, black cherry, blueberry skin and mulberry. Classic Mataro notes of earth, cracked pepper, leather, dried herbs and smoked meats weave through the bouquet. Subtle hints of anise, clove and cocoa reveal the influence of well-judged oak.
On the palate, the 2023 Mataro is medium-full bodied, textural and deeply flavoured. Concentrated dark fruits are framed by firm but refined tannins, giving the wine a muscular yet savoury edge. Earthy, gamey undertones and dried spice add complexity, while a fresh line of acidity provides balance and drive. The finish is long, savoury and satisfying, with persistent notes of spice, black fruit and warm earth.
