The 2023 E.J. McDougall Shiraz is a distinguished old-vine McLaren Vale Shiraz sourced from the renowned Blewitt Springs subregion, an area celebrated for producing some of Australia's most elegant and aromatic Shiraz wines. Crafted from vines averaging 86 years of age, this wine captures the depth, complexity, and character that only mature vineyards can deliver.
Grown on sandy gravel soils over red clay in the Mediterranean climate of Blewitt Springs, the vineyard naturally produces low yields of intensely flavoured fruit while retaining freshness and balance. The exceptional 2023 vintage allowed for optimal ripening conditions, resulting in a Shiraz that combines concentration with finesse.
Fruit was hand harvested and partially fermented with whole clusters in concrete vats, enhancing aromatic complexity, texture, and structure. Following fermentation, the wine matured for more than 10 months in seasoned French foudres, allowing the vineyard character to shine while building depth and integration without overt oak influence.
The wine reveals expressive aromas of blackberry, dark plum, blueberry, and black cherry, intertwined with notes of violet, black pepper, liquorice, dried herbs, and subtle earth. The palate is richly textured yet finely balanced, displaying concentrated dark fruit, silky tannins, and vibrant natural acidity. The long, savoury finish highlights the distinctive elegance and mineral character of Blewitt Springs old-vine Shiraz.
Enjoyable upon release with decanting, the 2023 E.J. McDougall Shiraz has the structure and balance to reward medium- to long-term cellaring over the next 10–15+ years.
