The 2022 Penfolds RWT Bin 798 Shiraz Lunar New Year (Snake) Edition is a limited-release collector’s presentation of one of Australia’s most luxurious Shiraz wines. Produced by Penfolds, this special Lunar New Year release celebrates the Year of the Snake with bespoke presentation packaging while showcasing the powerful yet polished style that defines RWT.
RWT, meaning “Red Winemaking Trial,” represents Penfolds’ distinctly Barossa-focused Shiraz philosophy, emphasising pure regional fruit expression and maturation in French oak rather than the American oak style associated with Grange. Sourced exclusively from premium Barossa Valley Shiraz vineyards, the 2022 vintage delivered fruit of exceptional richness, balance, and structural refinement.
In the winery, small-batch fermentation and careful extraction preserved depth and texture while maintaining freshness and precision. The wine was matured in French oak hogsheads, including a significant proportion of new oak, building complexity, spice, and seamless integration around the intense Barossa fruit core.
The wine opens with expressive aromas of blackberry, blueberry, and dark plum, layered with notes of dark chocolate, mocha, cedar, exotic spice, and subtle floral lift. The palate is full-bodied and opulent, offering plush dark fruit, velvety tannins, and exceptional concentration balanced by freshness and finely tuned acidity. The finish is long, layered, and luxurious.
