Awards, Ratings & Reviews

  • Cameron Douglas MS (95 / 100)
    2022 Vintage | Tasted: Feb 2025 | When to drink: 2026 to 2036+
"The bouquet is an immediate signature of the Wairarapa, Martinborough and Ata Rangi. Scents of clay and stony brown soils layered between scents of dark red berry scents and barrel spices, fine lees and complexity that can only come from vine age, barrel selection and attention to detail winemaking. Flavours of drying strawberries and cherry flesh, savoury spice layers of clove and vanilla then an abundance of texture from fine polished tannins and acid line that coats the palate with flavour and complexity. A delicious wine to melt your palate into. Best from any day you choose as well as 2026 through 2036+."
  • The Wine Front (95 / 100)
    2022 Vintage | Tasted: Aug 2025
  • Jancis Robinson (17 / 20)
    2022 Vintage | Tasted: Apr 2025 | When to drink: 2025 to 2035
  • James Suckling
    2022 Vintage | Tasted: Jun 2024
"A tight and focused Ata Rangi with sliced strawberries and hints of white pepper and minerals. It’s medium-bodied, crisp and fresh, with light wet earth and fresh mushroom undertones to the fruit. This has verve. Drink or hold."

About This Wine

Made from only the oldest pinot noir plantings on the Martinborough Terrace, this wine is considered the best of all the estate's vineyards in 2022. The result is a complex, elegant wine, beautifully perfumed in the classic Ata Rangi style.

The fabled Abel clone, allegedly smuggled from Burgundy in the mid-70s, makes up a significant portion of the blend.

Winemaking

Hand picking was slow and meticulous to ensure only the best fruit made it across the sorting table. The fruit was fermented with 40% whole bunch with the remainder destemmed, utilizing indigenous yeasts. Total tank time was 15-23 days. After pressing, complete malolactic ferment took place in oak. The wine was aged for 11 months total in French oak (30% new), then blended and held for further 8 months prior to bottling.

About the Winery

Ata Rangi is a leading estate in the Martinborough region in the south of New Zealand's North Island. It is particularly known for its intense, complex Pinot Noir, which is widely considered to be among the very best from the country. Ata Rangi is one of Martinborough's original four producers, founded by Clive Paton in 1980. The estate vineyards are certified organic, and all work is done by hand.
