100 Best Australian Wines — Matthew Jukes · 2025
“Good Lord, this is a phenomenal creation. I sat next to Lucy Hill-Smith when I enjoyed my very first sip of 2021 The Signature, and it was, at once, superbly aromatic, incredibly linear and discreetly spicy. There is amazing balance found here, and while this is a terroir-driven creation of imperial quality, the fruit is spotlessly clean, profoundly deep and amazingly vibrant. I absolutely love ’21 Sig, and I cannot wait to show it to the world...”
— Matthew Jukes, 27 Feb 2025
“With a little aeration, evocative notes of chocolate covered cherries and blueberries, wound in savory spice and graphite, reveal a complex wine with depth and fabulous aging potential. It's powerful with polish and balance, tightly wound for now, ready to uncoil slowly as the years go by. An excellent wine to release in this iconic producer's 175th anniversary year, that should age well over a decade.”

About This Wine
The Signature is one of Yalumba’s most iconic wines, first released in 1962. Each vintage is named in honour of an individual who has made a significant contribution to the culture and traditions of Yalumba.
The 2021 vintage honours Chris Gerhardy, who joined Yalumba in 1972 and progressed through bottling, dry goods and labels to become Packaging & Development Manager, contributing over 50 years of experience.
Cabernet Sauvignon for this wine was sourced from three Barossa Valley vineyards, while the Shiraz component comes from vineyards of varying age, with the oldest planted in 1925.
Tasting Notes
A beautiful, deep red in colour. Perfumed and seductive with alluring floral notes, red licorice, blackcurrant and dark cherry aromas. The palate is delightfully refined and balanced with generous dark red cherry fruit merging into ironstone tannins. A full-bodied wine of great balance, style and defined fruit characteristics with a long, lingering tannin profile.
About the Producer
Yalumba is one of Australia’s most historic family-owned wineries. Through its Rare & Fine portfolio, Yalumba produces wines crafted only when vineyard and winemaking elements align perfectly, showcasing the natural home of classic Australian varieties and blends.
