The 2021 Schild Estate Moorooroo Shiraz is a rare and profoundly expressive single-vineyard wine from one of the Barossa Valley’s oldest and most storied Shiraz sites. The Moorooroo vineyard, planted in 1847 by the legendary Joseph Gilbert, sits between the North Para and Jacob’s Creek rivers and is one of the Barossa’s oldest continuously producing blocks. Schild Estate’s custodianship of these ancient vines has elevated Moorooroo to cult status — each vintage released in extremely limited quantities.
The 2021 vintage was exceptional across the Barossa, delivering mild temperatures, extended ripening and beautifully balanced fruit. For the deeply rooted Moorooroo vines, these conditions allowed for superb flavour concentration, fine tannin development and remarkable aromatic detail — presenting one of the most complete and elegant Moorooroo expressions in recent memory.
The bouquet is captivating and layered, with aromas of blackberry, mulberry, black cherry and plum compote. Notes of licorice, dark chocolate, sarsaparilla, clove and violets emerge with air. Subtle nuances of cedar, warm spice, earth and cured meat reflect both the vineyard’s age and the wine’s luxurious oak maturation.
On the palate, the 2021 Moorooroo Shiraz is full-bodied, velvety and deeply concentrated. A rush of dark fruit saturates the palate, carried by fine yet authoritative tannins that provide structure without heaviness. The wine’s texture is plush and seamless, with flavours of black fruit, cocoa, anise, dried herbs and roasted spice building in complexity. A fresh line of acidity — characteristic of the excellent 2021 season — lifts the richness and drives a long, harmonious finish.
This is a magnificent release that marries Moorooroo’s trademark power with an elegance and precision rarely seen from such ancient vines. A true collector’s wine with decades of life ahead.
