230 dozen Grosset Nereus is inspired by the classic Sicilian combination of grape varieties shiraz and nero d’avola. It has taken five vintages to establish the ‘Nereus styleâ€? Originally intended as a weighty shiraz with a brightness and more linear palate coming from the nero d’avola, this 2021 vintage is confirmation that succulence, silkiness and drinkability are achievable with this blend. While unexpected, the result is wonderfully appealing. In 2021, Grosset Nereus has quietly briary aromatics which give it definition. There are succulent blackberry bramble flavours and a slinky silkiness on the mid-palate. While medium-bodied, it has attractive intensity and a finish that is smooth and gently lingering. In Greek mythology, Nereus is the son of Pontus and Gaia (the god of the sea and the goddess of the earth) and hence the relationship to Grosset's other wines and the earth. This link is strengthened by the fact that this blend of shiraz and nero d'avola is a traditional Sicilian style, hence 'Nereus' the Sea God. It has been biodynamically produced.
