The 2020 Pooley ‘Jack Denis Pooley’ Single Vineyard Pinot Noir represents the pinnacle of Tasmanian Pinot Noir and the ultimate expression of Pooley’s Butcher’s Hill Vineyard in the Coal River Valley. Produced in very limited quantities by Pooley Wines, this flagship wine is named in honour of Denis Pooley’s father, reflecting both family legacy and uncompromising attention to detail.
Sourced exclusively from the Butcher’s Hill Vineyard, one of Tasmania’s most celebrated Pinot Noir sites, the wine benefits from the region’s cool, dry climate and long growing season. These conditions allow for slow, even ripening, preserving vibrant natural acidity while building exceptional aromatic precision and fine tannin structure. The outstanding 2020 vintage delivered fruit of remarkable purity, balance, and concentration.
In the winery, grapes were hand-harvested and meticulously sorted before undergoing carefully managed fermentation designed to highlight site expression rather than winemaking artefact. Extraction was gentle and restrained, favouring elegance and texture over weight. The wine was matured in French oak barrels, including a judicious proportion of new oak, over an extended period to enhance complexity, structure, and seamless integration.
The resulting wine is exquisitely detailed and poised. Aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry, cranberry, and rose petal are layered with notes of spice, forest floor, dried herbs, and subtle savoury nuance. The palate is medium-bodied yet intensely focused, driven by precise red fruit, vibrant acidity, and silken, fine-grained tannins. A long, mineral-edged finish underscores the vineyard’s pedigree and the wine’s capacity for graceful ageing.
