The 2020 Greenock Creek Roennfeldt Road Shiraz is a towering, deeply concentrated expression from one of the Barossa Valley’s most iconic and fiercely distinctive single vineyards. The Roennfeldt Road site, located in the western Barossa near Marananga, is famed for its ancient, low-yielding vines rooted in hard, skeletal soils. These vines produce minuscule crops of tiny, thick-skinned berries that deliver profound intensity, colour and structure — the hallmarks of this legendary wine.
The 2020 vintage was warm and notably low-yielding, resulting in exceptionally dense and powerful Shiraz. Despite the challenges of the season, the fruit from Roennfeldt Road achieved outstanding ripeness and concentration, with superb tannin maturity and remarkable depth. This is a vintage that captures the trademark strength of Roennfeldt Road in a more compact, tightly coiled frame.
The wine opens with explosive aromas of blackberry liqueur, black plum, blueberry reduction and mulberry. Layers of licorice, dark chocolate, espresso bean, scorched earth and warm spice add immense complexity. Subtle notes of charcuterie, smoked vanilla, tar and graphite reflect both the vineyard’s character and the masterful use of high-quality American and French oak.
On the palate, the 2020 Roennfeldt Road Shiraz is monumental and intensely structured. Thick waves of black and blue fruits saturate the palate, supported by massive yet velvety tannins. The wine’s density is counterbalanced by a core of freshness and minerality that drives length and focus. Chocolate, mocha, clove, roasted meat and savoury spice deepen through the mid-palate, leading to an exceptionally long and authoritative finish that reverberates with dark fruit and warm earth.
While already impressive in youth, the 2020 Roennfeldt Road is built for the long haul. Over time, it will evolve into a more complex, layered and savoury expression, developing signature notes of leather, dried herbs, game and cigar box.
