Shiraz has a long-standing tradition in McLaren Vale, dating back to the 1850s. Lloyd Reserve Shiraz is crafted from a single vineyard at Coriole, which was planted in 1919, with its first release in 1989.
Lloyd Reserve Shiraz comes from a single vineyard at Coriole, with origins in the late 19th or early 20th century—some sources suggest planting as early as 1860. The inaugural Lloyd Reserve wine was released in 1989. The vineyard's deep soils and roots typically negate the need for irrigation. The wine undergoes maturation in French oak for around 18 months, followed by an additional 18+ months in bottle before being released.
Sourced from old vines and crafted in a traditional style, this wine boasts an impressive history of ageability. It's boldly full-bodied, with notes of black fruit, fennel seed, menthol, smoked salumi, and astringent oak tannins that initially come across as green. However, as it breathes, the fruit gradually emerges, revealing a plush boysenberry pie-like sweetness. While it may not be to everyone's taste, it's undeniably a well-made wine for those who appreciate this style.
