The 2019 Tyrrell’s 8 Acres Shiraz is a classic and site-driven expression of Hunter Valley Shiraz, drawn from one of Australia’s most historic vineyards. Produced by Tyrrell's Wines, the 8 Acres vineyard was planted in 1908 and is among the oldest continuously producing Shiraz sites in the country, celebrated for its ability to deliver wines of finesse, savoury complexity, and exceptional longevity.
Located in Pokolbin on distinctive red volcanic soils, the 8 Acres vineyard consistently produces Shiraz of moderate alcohol, bright natural acidity, and finely structured tannins. The excellent 2019 vintage provided ideal conditions for flavour development while preserving freshness, resulting in a wine that captures the understated power and earthy elegance that define great Hunter Shiraz.
Winemaking followed Tyrrell’s traditional, low-intervention approach. The fruit was hand-harvested and fermented to emphasise vineyard character, with gentle extraction to retain perfume and fine tannin structure. Maturation took place in large, seasoned oak casks, ensuring oak influence remains subtle and allowing savoury and textural elements to take centre stage.
The wine opens with lifted aromas of red and black cherry, plum, and blueberry, layered with classic Hunter notes of earth, dried herbs, spice, leather, and subtle game. The palate is medium-bodied and finely poised, showing bright acidity, supple yet persistent tannins, and a long, dry, savoury finish that underscores its excellent cellaring potential.
Approachable now with decanting, the 2019 Tyrrell’s 8 Acres Shiraz will continue to evolve gracefully over 15–25+ years, developing additional layers of savoury complexity and tertiary character.
