Overview
The 2019 Roagna Gallina Barbaresco is a commanding and cerebral expression of Nebbiolo from the historic Gallina vineyard in Neive. Known for producing some of Barbaresco’s most structured and age-worthy wines, Gallina delivers depth, minerality, and classical restraint. The 2019 vintage combines aromatic clarity with formidable structure, marking this as a serious, long-lived Barbaresco.
Vineyard and Winemaking
The Gallina cru sits on calcareous marl soils with excellent exposure, yielding Nebbiolo of power and precision. Roagna farms the vineyard organically, with very low yields from mature vines. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts in large wooden vats, followed by extended maceration to gently extract tannin and complexity. Ageing takes place for approximately four to five years in large neutral Slavonian oak botti, with no fining or filtration, preserving the vineyard’s identity with transparency and integrity.
Tasting Notes
The bouquet is deep and layered, revealing sour cherry, red currant, dried rose, and orange peel, supported by notes of ironstone, anise, and crushed herbs. The palate is firm and tightly wound, showing red fruit purity framed by chalky, assertive tannins and vibrant acidity. The finish is long, savoury, and mineral-driven, with a stern, classical edge that promises great longevity.
Style and Character
More structured and brooding than Roagna’s Albesani, the 2019 Gallina Barbaresco is a wine of seriousness and architectural strength. It exemplifies traditional Barbaresco at its most disciplined and enduring, rewarding patience and careful cellaring.
Cellaring and Pairing
Best cellared until at least 2030, with the capacity to evolve gracefully for 25–30 years. Decant generously when young. Ideal with braised meats, game, mushroom dishes, or truffle-based cuisine that complement its depth and structure.
