The 2019 Penfolds St Henri Shiraz is a classic and distinctive expression of Australian Shiraz, revered for its purity of fruit, savoury depth, and exceptional ageing capability. Produced by the iconic Penfolds, St Henri stands apart within the Penfolds portfolio for its traditional winemaking approach, eschewing new oak in favour of large, seasoned vats that allow vineyard character to shine.
The 2019 vintage is widely regarded as outstanding across South Australia, delivering Shiraz of concentration, balance, and fine tannin structure. St Henri is a multi-regional blend, drawing on premium parcels from regions such as Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and Clare Valley, combining richness with restraint and complexity.
In the winery, the wine was fermented using traditional methods and matured in large, old oak vats for approximately 12 months. This approach avoids overt oak influence, instead emphasising texture, savoury nuance, and natural structure, resulting in a wine that evolves gracefully over decades.
The bouquet is deep and expressive, offering aromas of blackberry, plum, and dark cherry, layered with notes of anise, spice, earth, leather, and subtle gamey complexity. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, supple yet structured, with finely woven tannins, balanced acidity, and a long, savoury finish. Compared to oak-driven styles, St Henri delivers a more classical, food-friendly profile with remarkable poise.
