“The Mount Langi Ghiran winery got its name from the Aboriginal words for home of the yellow tailed black cockatoo. It was established in 1969 by brothers Don, Lino, and Serge Fratin, natives of Italy’s Veneto region. In 1980, they hired winemaker Trevor Mast who with his wife bought the winery in 1986. He remained at Mount Langi Ghiran until 2006 when Adam Louder became Chief Winemaker. He is the one who made this wine. It comes from the Langi vineyard, which was the first vineyard planted by the brothers. It is concentrated and complex with fruit flavours of blackberry, blueberry, and cherry, laced with notes of peppercorns, vanilla, baking spices and a touch of smoke. While the fruit is concentrated, the wine it is not heavy. It has vibrant acidity that enlivens the fruit and the chalky tannins that support a solid yet supple structure. (Rebecca Murphy)”

“Hand-picked fruit, 90/10% whole berries/bunches into small open-top fermenters with natural yeasts. Pressed to tank, transferred to French oak barriques (60% new) for mlf and 18 months' maturation. The Swiss clone, planted in 1969 and still on its own roots, is at the heart of this impressive flagship shiraz. It has a deep vein of ripeness of dark plum, aniseed, sage, lifted wood spices and blackberries. Taut across the palate in structure but velvety in flavour, it raises the question of when to drink. The answer: not just now, if possible.”

“(2023) One of the ‘better years for a long time’ in the words of viticulturist Damien Sheehan. Benchmark cool climate Shiraz – magnificently spice, peppery and complex. Very low-yielding old block with only 1.5 tons to the acre. 60% new oak effortlessly absorbed, although the wine is still tight and need airing before drinking. “From over-50-year-old vines, this Shiraz shows its cool climate origins in the remote, rugged Grampians mountain range straight out of the gate. It's sappy and peppery with luscious blackberry fruit and a baking spice, licorice and charred wood underbelly. The palate is full figured but linear and fresh, with racy acidity that adds a crackle to the fruit and a snap to the chalky, chiseled tannins. Drink now with protein until 2033.”

Langi Shiraz is a revered benchmark for cool climate Australian Shiraz. From the fruit of old vines planted on our isolated vineyard in 1969, this landmark wine reveals the vibrant synergy between site and variety.
The Langi Old Block shiraz vineyard dips and weaves across the landscape, proffering parcels of fruit of extreme complexity and stunning finesse. Each of these parcels is selectively harvested and then fermented separately to capture their inimitable qualities at their peak. Gift box included.
