Indigo Vineyard 2019 Secret Village Pinot Noir
Production 1,700 bottles
The Vintage: Warm days and nights during November and December, combined with good soil moisture encouraged excellent canopy growth. December delivered 3 times the normal monthly rainfall. After the deluge in December, January heated up with sustained hot weather for much of the month. Fruit ripening was accelerated due to the warmer temperatures. The 14th of February saw the beginning of harvest 5 days later than in 2018. The Pinot Noir for this wine was handpicked on 16 and 19 February.
Winemaking: Fruit was hand-picked and about 25% whole bunches were used in the ferment. Maturation was in French oak with 30% in new oak and the balance in barrels of varying age from a variety of coopers. Minimal intervention is required to maximize pinot characters and to allow the soils and the character of the region to be displayed.
Our thoughts: The colour in the glass is soft and light which belies the complexity on the palate. This wine is soft, subtle and complex. Forest floor characters provide depth, the dark fruit characters of bramble and plum give layers of interest, the soft fine tannins tie things together. An attractive medium bodied wine matured in bottle for 30 months to develop complexity and delicious balanced aged characters.
Food: The traditional pairing with duck makes perfect sense with this wine. In warmer months a salad served with local Harrietville trout will delight the senses.
