The 2019 Craggy Range Aroha Pinot Noir is a profound and age-worthy single-vineyard Pinot Noir from Martinborough, widely regarded as one of New Zealand’s greatest expressions of the variety. Produced by Craggy Range, Aroha represents the pinnacle of Pinot Noir from the estate’s Te Muna Road vineyards, combining power, finesse, and remarkable site transparency.
Fruit is sourced exclusively from the Aroha Vineyard, a prized hillside site planted on ancient, free-draining gravel and clay soils. Martinborough’s cool, dry climate and long growing season allow for slow, even ripening, delivering Pinot Noir of concentration, aromatic intensity, and vibrant natural acidity. The outstanding 2019 vintage provided exceptional balance and structural precision, ideal for long-term cellaring.
In the winery, grapes were hand-harvested and fermented using traditional techniques, with a portion of whole bunches included to enhance aromatic lift, structure, and savoury complexity. Extraction was carefully managed to preserve purity and texture, and the wine was matured in French oak barrels, including a proportion of new oak, to build depth and harmony without overshadowing the fruit.
The wine opens with deep aromas of dark cherry, black raspberry, and plum, layered with notes of spice, dried herbs, forest floor, and subtle earthy nuance. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, dense yet poised, with finely grained tannins, bright acidity, and a long, mineral-driven finish that reflects the vineyard’s elevated site and pedigree.
