The 2017 Grosset Polish Hill Riesling is a benchmark release from one of Australia’s most iconic producers of cool-climate Riesling. Sourced exclusively from the famed Polish Hill vineyard in the Clare Valley — a site defined by its slate and shale soils, low vigour, and naturally restrained yields — this Riesling embodies purity, precision and extraordinary longevity. Grosset’s meticulous organic and biodynamic practices ensure fruit of exceptional clarity and tension, qualities that shine in the outstanding 2017 vintage.
The season delivered near-perfect conditions: a cool start, mild summer temperatures and a long, even ripening window. These conditions allowed Riesling to accumulate intense flavour at low to moderate sugar levels, producing a wine with striking aromatic lift and finely etched acidity.
The bouquet opens with classic Polish Hill refinement: lime zest, lemon blossom, green apple, crushed slate and hints of white florals. Underneath the citrus purity lie subtle mineral and talc notes — signatures of this singular vineyard site.
On the palate, the 2017 Polish Hill is taut, focused and quietly powerful. Its intensity builds gradually, revealing layers of lime juice, grapefruit pith, white peach and mineral salts. The acidity is razor-fine yet beautifully integrated, giving structure and endurance without hardness. Even in its youth, the wine shows remarkable balance; with time, it evolves into a more textural, complex expression with honeyed and lanolin-like tertiary notes while maintaining its crystalline core.
The finish is long, dry and energetic, echoing citrus, wet stone and slate — a hallmark of the Polish Hill terroir.
