The 2017 Château Latour is a powerful, precise and classically structured expression from one of Bordeaux’s most revered First Growth estates. Situated in the heart of Pauillac, Château Latour is synonymous with authority, longevity and uncompromising quality. Since withdrawing from the traditional en primeur system, Latour now releases wines only when deemed ready by the château — reinforcing its reputation for excellence and patience.
The 2017 vintage in Pauillac was shaped by a challenging growing season, including severe spring frosts in parts of Bordeaux. Latour’s vineyards, however, were largely spared due to their proximity to the Gironde estuary and meticulous vineyard management. The result is a wine that prioritises precision, freshness and structure over sheer power — a hallmark of great Latour in cooler, classical years.
The bouquet is deep and restrained, revealing aromas of blackcurrant, cassis, graphite and crushed stone. Layers of cedar, cigar box, violets and subtle spice emerge with aeration, reflecting Latour’s unmistakable terroir and Cabernet Sauvignon dominance.
On the palate, the 2017 Château Latour is full-bodied, focused and impeccably balanced. Dense dark fruit is framed by firm, finely grained tannins that give the wine its architectural structure. Flavours of blackberry, pencil shavings, cocoa and savoury earth unfold with remarkable clarity. A vibrant core of acidity provides lift and energy, carrying the wine through a long, controlled and mineral-driven finish.
While more approachable in youth than some monumental Latour vintages, the 2017 possesses the depth, balance and tannin framework required for extended ageing. It will continue to evolve gracefully over decades, developing the complexity and authority that define Château Latour.
