Produced by Charles Melton Wines, this flagship wine continues a legacy that has made Nine Popes one of the country's most iconic and collectible red blends.
Named as a tribute to the famous Châteauneuf-du-Pape region, Nine Popes is crafted from a carefully selected blend of Grenache and Shiraz, with a small contribution from Mataro. Sourced from low-yielding old-vine vineyards throughout the Barossa Valley, the wine reflects both the power of the region and the finesse that has become synonymous with the Charles Melton style.
The 2017 vintage provided excellent growing conditions, producing fruit with outstanding concentration, natural balance, and aromatic complexity. Matured in predominantly seasoned French oak for approximately two years, the wine developed additional texture and complexity while preserving its vibrant fruit character.
The bouquet is intensely perfumed, revealing aromas of raspberry, blackberry, plum, kirsch, and dark cherry, layered with notes of dried herbs, liquorice, exotic spice, earth, and subtle savoury oak. Distinctive garrigue-like nuances and floral undertones add further complexity and regional charm.
The palate is rich and full-bodied, yet remarkably poised and elegant. Generous red and dark berry fruits are supported by silky tannins, vibrant acidity, and a savoury mineral thread that carries through to a long, persistent finish. Grenache provides perfume and texture, Shiraz contributes structure and depth, while the small Mataro component adds savoury complexity and longevity.
