The 2016 Wendouree Shiraz Mataro is one of the finest modern releases from this legendary Clare Valley estate. Produced from historic dry-grown vineyards, it combines exceptional fruit purity, concentration, and structure in a wine destined for long-term cellaring.
Established in 1893, Wendouree remains one of Australia's most respected and tightly allocated wineries. The estate's old-vine Shiraz and Mataro vineyards consistently produce wines of extraordinary character, reflecting the unique ironstone soils and continental climate of Clare Valley.
The exceptional 2016 vintage is widely regarded as one of the greatest South Australian vintages of the past two decades. Near-perfect growing conditions delivered fruit with remarkable intensity, balance, and tannin quality. The result is a Shiraz Mataro of extraordinary precision and longevity.
The bouquet displays powerful aromas of blackberry, satsuma plum, black cherry, and mulberry, intertwined with notes of black pepper, liquorice, dried herbs, violets, ironstone, and exotic spice. The palate is concentrated and beautifully proportioned, showing dense dark fruit, fine-grained tannins, vibrant acidity, and outstanding persistence. Despite its power, the wine remains remarkably elegant and controlled.
Still youthful and tightly wound, the 2016 Wendouree Shiraz Mataro is built for extended cellaring and is expected to evolve magnificently over the next 25–35+ years.
