The 2016 Henschke Mount Edelstone Shiraz is one of Australia's finest single-vineyard Shiraz wines, sourced from the historic Mount Edelstone vineyard in Eden Valley. Produced by Henschke, this iconic wine originates from ungrafted vines first planted in 1912, delivering a remarkable combination of concentration, elegance, and longevity.
The 2016 vintage is widely regarded as one of the greatest in recent Australian winemaking history. A mild growing season with excellent ripening conditions allowed the fruit to develop exceptional flavour intensity while retaining freshness and natural acidity. The ancient, well-drained soils and elevated Eden Valley location contribute to the wine's distinctive structure, perfume, and mineral complexity.
Hand-harvested fruit was gently fermented and matured in premium French oak hogsheads, allowing the vineyard character to remain the focus while enhancing texture and complexity. The result is a Shiraz of extraordinary balance, precision, and depth.
The bouquet is intensely aromatic, revealing layers of blackberry, satsuma plum, blueberry, and black cherry, intertwined with notes of star anise, black pepper, sage, dried herbs, violets, and subtle cedar spice. The palate is concentrated yet beautifully poised, with silky tannins, vibrant acidity, and exceptional length. Powerful without being heavy, it displays the hallmark elegance that defines great Eden Valley Shiraz.
