Description

For 200 years, Chateau Fourcas Hosten has enjoyed a fine reputation due its unusual terroir. In 2006, the estate was sold to the Mommeja brothers by Peter Sichel.

The vineyard is evenly planted with 45% Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. There is 10% Cabernet Franc. The Chateau produces about 22,000 cases per year. In 2016, the final blend was 55% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Cabernet Franc. The winery is currently transitioning to Organic farming. The red wines were expected to be certified in 2021.

Decanter: 92

I have been consistently impressed with the efforts and investment happening at this property since the Mommeja brothers took over (with Renaud very much taking the lead). This is tightly drawn and austere right now but the elements are all in place, showing good dark fruits, fresh acidity running through the palate, and rich, well integrated tannins. Good potential. Planted to 53% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon with the rest Cabernet Franc. Drinking Window 2025 - 2038.

Wine Enthusiast: 92

Barrel Sample. This wine has a ripe core, rich in black fruit tones and firm tannins. It is a structured wine, but at the same time it has supporting black-fruit flavors at the center. It should age well, and will probably be ready to drink after 2025.

James Suckling: 90

A linear and fresh red with currant, raspberry and lemon aromas and flavors, following through to a medium body, firm tannins and a bright finish. A blend of merlot and cabernet sauvignon. Drink or hold.
