The 2016 Bass Phillip Premium Chardonnay is a rare and highly sought-after expression of Gippsland Chardonnay, reflecting the estate’s commitment to low yields, biodynamic farming, and minimal-intervention winemaking. Sourced from low-yielding estate vines in South Gippsland, the cool maritime climate allows for slow ripening and exceptional flavour concentration while preserving natural acidity. The 2016 vintage delivered outstanding balance and structural precision, providing the foundation for a Chardonnay of depth and refinement.
In the winery, fruit was hand-harvested and whole-bunch pressed before fermentation in French oak barrels, including a proportion of new oak. Extended lees maturation enhanced texture and complexity, while minimal intervention preserved the vineyard’s natural expression and mineral drive.
The wine opens with aromas of white peach, nectarine, and citrus blossom, layered with notes of hazelnut, subtle flint, and gentle oak spice. The palate is concentrated yet poised, with creamy texture balanced by vibrant acidity and a long, mineral-laced finish. With time in bottle, additional savoury and nutty nuances have begun to emerge, adding further depth.
