The 2015 Charles Melton Nine Popes is one of Australia's most iconic Rhône-inspired blends and a benchmark expression of Barossa Valley Grenache and Shiraz. First released in 1988, Nine Popes pays tribute to the great wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape while expressing the unique richness and character of old-vine Barossa fruit.
The outstanding 2015 vintage comprises approximately 49% Grenache, 48% Shiraz and 3% Mataro, sourced from low-yielding vineyards across the Barossa Valley. A near-perfect growing season delivered fruit of exceptional concentration, balance and structure, resulting in one of the strongest modern releases of Nine Popes.
Matured predominantly in seasoned French oak barriques for approximately 24 to 28 months, the wine combines power with elegance, allowing the purity of fruit and regional character to remain at the forefront.
The bouquet is intensely aromatic, revealing layers of musky plum, mulberry, kirsch, blackberry and dark cherry, intertwined with notes of dried herbs, exotic spice, liquorice and the distinctive garrigue-like earthiness that has become a hallmark of Nine Popes. Subtle savoury oak influences add further complexity without overwhelming the fruit.
The palate is rich, generous and beautifully structured, delivering lush dark berry fruits, silky tannins and remarkable concentration. Grenache contributes perfume, texture and brightness, while Shiraz provides depth and structure. A small component of Mataro adds savoury complexity and longevity. The finish is long, persistent and finely balanced, demonstrating why Nine Popes remains one of Australia's most celebrated red blends.
Now drinking beautifully, the 2015 Nine Popes offers immediate enjoyment while retaining the structure to continue evolving in the cellar for years to come. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended to fully reveal its complexity.
