The 2014 Wendouree Shiraz Mataro is a powerful and beautifully structured Clare Valley blend from one of Australia's most iconic cult wineries. Produced from historic dry-grown vineyards, this highly sought-after wine combines the richness of old-vine Shiraz with the savoury complexity and structure of Mataro, creating a wine built for decades of cellaring.
The outstanding 2014 vintage provided ideal ripening conditions throughout Clare Valley, producing fruit of exceptional concentration, balance, and tannin maturity. Wendouree's old-vine vineyards, planted on ironstone-rich soils, delivered fruit with remarkable intensity while maintaining freshness and precision.
Traditional fermentation and maturation in French oak preserve the authenticity of the vineyard expression. Bottled under screwcap, the wine has evolved beautifully while retaining the freshness and structure that define great Wendouree releases.
The wine reveals aromas of blackberry, black plum, mulberry, and black cherry, layered with notes of black pepper, liquorice, dried herbs, cedar, ironstone, and earthy spice. The palate is concentrated and powerful, displaying dense fruit, firm yet refined tannins, vibrant natural acidity, and exceptional persistence. Mataro contributes savoury complexity, floral lift, and additional structure, complementing the depth of Shiraz perfectly.
Now entering an excellent drinking window, the 2014 Wendouree Shiraz Mataro still possesses significant cellaring potential and is expected to evolve gracefully over the next 15–25+ years.
