The 2014 Mount Mary Pinot Noir is a refined and age-worthy expression of Yarra Valley Pinot Noir, produced by the iconic Mount Mary Vineyard. Widely regarded as one of Australia’s most classically styled producers, Mount Mary is celebrated for its emphasis on balance, restraint, and vineyard expression, with Pinot Noir playing a central role in its reputation.
Fruit for the 2014 vintage was sourced exclusively from Mount Mary’s estate vineyards in the Yarra Valley. The cool-climate conditions of the season encouraged slow, even ripening, preserving natural acidity and aromatic detail while allowing flavour development at moderate alcohol levels. The result is a wine built on finesse, structure, and longevity rather than overt power.
Winemaking followed Mount Mary’s traditional, low-intervention philosophy. Grapes were hand-harvested and fermented with gentle extraction to protect delicacy and fine tannin structure. Maturation took place in French oak barrels, carefully managed to support complexity and texture without overshadowing the purity of the fruit.
The wine opens with aromas of red cherry, cranberry, and wild strawberry, complemented by notes of dried herbs, spice, forest floor, and subtle savoury nuances. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and finely layered, with precise red fruit, bright acidity, and fine-grained tannins leading to a long, composed finish. The balance between fruit, structure, and savoury detail highlights the wine’s capacity to age gracefully.
Approachable now with light decanting, the 2014 Mount Mary Pinot Noir will continue to develop additional complexity over the coming years, rewarding careful cellaring.
