The 2012 Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz is a bold yet classically proportioned Australian Shiraz, renowned for its consistency, approachability, and capacity to age with grace. Produced by the iconic Penfolds, Bin 28 has long been celebrated as a benchmark expression of warm-climate Shiraz, offering depth and character at an accessible level within the Penfolds hierarchy.
Named after the historic Kalimna vineyard in the Barossa Valley, Bin 28 is a multi-regional blend, drawing predominantly from Barossa Valley fruit alongside select parcels from other premium South Australian regions. The excellent 2012 vintage delivered Shiraz with generous ripeness, balanced acidity, and well-defined tannins, resulting in a wine of both power and harmony.
In the winery, fruit was fermented using traditional Penfolds methods, with controlled extraction to build richness and structure. The wine was matured for approximately 12 months in American oak hogsheads, a combination of new and seasoned barrels, imparting classic notes of spice, vanilla, and toasted oak while maintaining fruit purity.
The wine opens with expressive aromas of blackberry, plum, and dark cherry, layered with notes of liquorice, clove, chocolate, and subtle savoury nuances. The palate is full-bodied and generous, delivering ripe dark fruit flavours, rounded tannins, and a smooth, lingering finish with hallmark Penfolds oak influence.
Now showing attractive secondary development, the 2012 Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz is drinking well with decanting and will continue to evolve gracefully over the next 5–10+ years, developing added complexity and savoury depth.
