The 2011 Wendouree Malbec is a rare and highly sought-after Clare Valley red from one of Australia's most iconic cult wineries. Produced by Wendouree, this wine exemplifies the estate's reputation for producing structured, age-worthy wines that reward patience and careful cellaring.
Founded in 1893, Wendouree remains one of Australia's most traditional and respected producers. The estate's historic 12-hectare vineyard contains old-vine Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Mataro, and Muscat of Alexandria, with many vines dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Since 1974, Tony and Lita Brady have overseen the property, maintaining the winery's commitment to low-intervention viticulture and traditional winemaking.
The vineyard is dry-grown and hand-harvested, allowing the old vines to produce fruit of exceptional concentration and character. Fermentation takes place using indigenous yeasts in open-top stainless-steel fermenters before maturation in French oak barrels for up to twelve months. The result is a wine that expresses both the individuality of the vintage and the distinctive Wendouree style.
The cooler 2011 vintage produced a Malbec of elegance, freshness, and classical structure. Aromas of blackberry, mulberry, dark plum, and black cherry are complemented by notes of ironstone, dried herbs, tobacco leaf, leather, and savoury spice. The palate is medium-bodied and finely structured, with vibrant acidity, refined tannins, and impressive persistence. More restrained than warmer vintages, it offers exceptional balance and complexity while remaining true to Wendouree's famously age-worthy character.
