Vineyard
The 2011 vintage was sourced from select vineyards across the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley, and Magill Estate. Grange is typically Shiraz-dominant with a small addition of Cabernet Sauvignon, matured in 100% new American oak hogsheads for 18 months.
Vintage
2011 was one of the most challenging vintages in South Australia in decades, with unusually wet and cool conditions. Many wines across the state struggled, but Penfolds’ meticulous vineyard selection ensured Grange retained its benchmark quality. As a result, the 2011 Grange is more savoury and restrained than blockbuster vintages, but it remains a fascinating, elegant, and long-lived interpretation of the style.
Tasting Notes
The 2011 Grange is deep crimson with ruby hues. The bouquet opens with blackberry, plum, and redcurrant, interwoven with licorice, dark chocolate, espresso, and subtle charcuterie notes. The palate is medium to full-bodied, showing more restraint than usual Grange vintages, but with excellent fruit purity, savoury complexity, and firm tannins. The finish is long, balanced, and refined, showcasing an elegant, age-worthy side of Grange.
