The 2010 Balnaves The Tally Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is a powerful and beautifully crafted flagship Coonawarra Cabernet, produced only in outstanding vintages. From the renowned terra rossa soils of the region, this wine displays exceptional concentration, purity, and structural finesse — a true benchmark for modern Australian Cabernet.
Vineyard and Winemaking
Sourced from low-yielding estate vines in the heart of Coonawarra, the fruit was harvested at full physiological ripeness to ensure depth and balance. Fermentation took place in small open fermenters, followed by extended maceration to enhance colour and tannin integration. The wine was matured in high-quality French oak barriques (a significant portion new) for 18–20 months, contributing complexity, perfume, and fine-grained tannin structure.
Tasting Notes
Deep garnet in colour. Aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, and cassis are layered with notes of cedar, graphite, tobacco leaf, and dark chocolate. The palate is intense yet refined, delivering concentrated black fruit, savoury spice, and polished tannins. The mid-palate is plush and powerful with excellent drive, leading to a long, structured finish supported by bright acidity and lingering oak spice.
