Located 2 kilometres northwest of Clare township on the opposite side of the hill on which Jim Barry Winery is located, is home to the famed 'The Armagh Shiraz'. The vineyard derives its name from a nearby hamlet of Armagh, established by Irish settlers in 1849 and named after lush, rolling hills of their homeland.
The name ‘Armagh’ was bestowed by the original Irish settlers who arrived in 1849 and named the lush, rolling hills after their homeland. In 1968 the vineyard was planted by Jim Barry and yields less than two tonnes per acre. The soil is sandy gravel and receives an average rainfall of 600mm per year. The vineyard lies on a north-west facing slope which acts as a natural sun trap, ensuring the fruit is always fully ripened when picked.
Winemaking Notes
The 2021 bursts from the glass displaying vibrant blueberry, redcurrant and purple fruits with sage, violets, licorice and kalamata olive tapenade playing a supporting role.
The dark purple pastille fruit stains the palate before a flush of cranberry, blackberries and orange oil perfume explode in the mouth. Fine sandy tannins, bring the wine into focus with mulberry acidity driving the wine to a long and expansive finish. A bouquet garni of thyme, sage and mountain herbs adds freshness while clove and star anise spice adds a background top note.
The 2021 The Armagh is full of energy with acidity and tannin giving great tension to the waves of bright, fresh red and purple fruit. The perfect growing season has given an Armagh that magnifies all of the best characters of the vineyard, distilled down to a wine which displaying power and finesse and not previously seen from this site.
