The 2009 Charles Melton Nine Popes Shiraz – Grenache is a benchmark Barossa Valley blend and one of Australia’s most iconic modern Rhône-inspired wines. Crafted by Charles Melton Wines, Nine Popes has achieved cult status for its ability to combine Barossa power with finesse, perfume, and remarkable ageing ability.
Sourced from old-vine Shiraz and Grenache vineyards across the Barossa Valley, the 2009 vintage benefited from excellent growing conditions that delivered ripe, concentrated fruit with natural balance. Grenache provides fragrance, lift, and supple texture, while Shiraz contributes depth, structure, and dark-fruited intensity—together forming a harmonious and age-worthy blend.
In the winery, fruit was hand-harvested and fermented separately in small batches, allowing each variety to express its character before blending. Traditional extraction methods were employed to build depth without sacrificing elegance. The wine was then matured in French oak barrels for an extended period, enhancing complexity while preserving freshness and varietal clarity.
Now with significant bottle age, the 2009 Nine Popes displays a beautifully evolved bouquet of black cherry, plum, raspberry compote, and dried herbs, layered with notes of liquorice, leather, spice, earth, and subtle cedar. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, richly textured yet poised, with resolved tannins, integrated oak, and a long, savoury finish that speaks to both provenance and patience.
