The 2008 Yarra Yering Dry Red No. 2 is a benchmark Australian Shiraz-based blend from the Yarra Valley, revered for its elegance, savoury complexity, and extraordinary ability to age. Produced by the iconic Yarra Yering, Dry Red No. 2 is traditionally composed of Shiraz with a small inclusion of Viognier, inspired by the great wines of the northern Rhône yet unmistakably expressive of its Yarra Valley origins.
The 2008 vintage in the Yarra Valley delivered excellent balance and definition, producing wines of structure, freshness, and aromatic lift. Sourced from low-yielding estate vines planted on ancient, low-fertility soils, Dry Red No. 2 reflects Yarra Yering’s uncompromising focus on site expression and longevity.
In the winery, fruit was handled with restraint, using traditional fermentation techniques and gentle extraction to preserve perfume and fine tannin structure. Maturation took place in French oak barrels, predominantly seasoned, allowing savoury complexity and textural depth to develop without overt oak influence.
With significant bottle age, the wine now shows a beautifully evolved profile. Aromas of dark cherry, blackberry, and plum are layered with notes of white pepper, dried herbs, floral lift, earth, leather, and subtle game. The palate is medium-bodied and finely structured, with resolved yet persistent tannins, bright acidity, and a long, savoury, harmonious finish that speaks to both provenance and patience.
