The 2008 Craggy Range Sophia is a distinguished Hawke’s Bay red blend inspired by the great wines of Pomerol and Saint-Émilion. Produced from the estate’s iconic Gimblett Gravels vineyards, this mature vintage showcases refinement, balance, and depth, revealing the graceful evolution of a meticulously crafted Merlot-led blend.
Vineyard and Winemaking
Sophia is sourced from low-yielding vines planted on the free-draining gravel soils of Gimblett Gravels, a site renowned for producing structured yet elegant Bordeaux-style wines. Merlot forms the core of the blend, supported by Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec. Each parcel was fermented separately, followed by maturation in French oak barriques to build complexity, integration, and longevity.
Tasting Notes
Now at an expressive stage of maturity, the bouquet reveals black cherry, plum, and cassis layered with notes of cedar, tobacco leaf, graphite, and subtle earthy spice. The palate is supple and harmonious, offering dark fruit richness, savoury nuance, and finely resolved tannins. The finish is long, composed, and gently savoury, reflecting both site and careful ageing.
