The 2006 Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz is a beautifully matured release of one of Australia’s most iconic blended reds. Often referred to as “Baby Grange,” Bin 389 is renowned for combining the structural backbone of Cabernet Sauvignon with the richness and generosity of Shiraz, matured in the same American oak hogsheads previously used for Grange. The 2006 vintage stands as a classic expression of the style — powerful yet balanced, and now showing rewarding tertiary complexity.
The 2006 growing season across South Australia was warm and generally favourable, producing fruit with excellent ripeness, depth and tannin maturity. Penfolds’ multi-regional blending philosophy allowed the winemaking team to select the best parcels to build a wine of harmony, concentration and long-term ageing potential.
With nearly two decades of bottle age, the 2006 Bin 389 has evolved beautifully. The bouquet opens with aromas of blackcurrant, plum and dark cherry, layered with cedar, cigar box and graphite. Secondary notes of leather, mocha, cocoa, dried herbs and warm spice reflect its maturation and classic Penfolds oak influence.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, supple and seamlessly integrated. Cabernet provides firm structure and definition, while Shiraz contributes plush mid-palate weight and dark fruit richness. The tannins are resolved and velvety, supporting flavours of aged cassis, blackberry, chocolate, spice and savoury earth. A balanced line of acidity carries the wine through a long, smooth and harmonious finish.
