The 2005 Rockford SVS Hoffmann Shiraz is one of the most collectible and age-worthy wines produced by Rockford Wines. Part of the prestigious SVS (Single Vineyard Selection) range, this rare release is sourced exclusively from the renowned Hoffmann Vineyard in Ebenezer, one of the Barossa Valley's most celebrated old-vine sites.
The Hoffmann family has supplied fruit to Rockford for decades, with the vineyard's ancient vines producing Shiraz of remarkable concentration, structure, and regional character. Situated in the northern Barossa sub-region of Ebenezer, the vineyard is renowned for delivering wines with exceptional depth, dark fruit intensity, and extraordinary longevity.
The outstanding 2005 vintage provided ideal growing conditions, allowing the fruit to achieve excellent ripeness while retaining balance and freshness. Traditional Rockford winemaking techniques were employed throughout production, including open fermentation, basket pressing, and maturation in seasoned oak, allowing the vineyard character to remain the focal point.
After nearly two decades of bottle age, the wine reveals an intensely complex bouquet of blackberry, satsuma plum, black cherry, and mulberry, layered with notes of dark chocolate, liquorice, cedar, espresso, earth, and exotic spice. Further maturation has developed tertiary nuances of leather, tobacco leaf, forest floor, and savoury game.
The palate is rich, concentrated, and beautifully integrated, with velvety tannins supporting layers of dark fruit and savoury complexity. Despite its power, the wine retains remarkable balance and freshness, leading to an exceptionally long and persistent finish. The Hoffmann Vineyard signature of density, structure, and mineral depth remains clearly evident.
Drinking magnificently now, the 2005 SVS Hoffmann Shiraz remains a benchmark mature Barossa Shiraz and will continue to provide outstanding drinking for many years under ideal cellaring conditions.
