Product Description

The 2005 Mount Mary Pinot Noir is a rare, mature example of traditional Yarra Valley Pinot Noir, produced by the highly regarded Mount Mary Vineyard. Renowned for its restrained, site-driven approach, Mount Mary has long been a benchmark for fine-boned, age-worthy Australian Pinot Noir, and the 2005 vintage highlights the estate’s capacity for graceful long-term evolution.

Fruit for this wine was sourced from Mount Mary’s estate vineyards in the Yarra Valley, a region celebrated for its cool climate and extended growing seasons. The 2005 season allowed for slow, even ripening, resulting in fruit with natural acidity, moderate alcohol, and finely detailed flavour profiles—ideal conditions for Pinot Noir built on elegance rather than power.

Winemaking followed a classical, hands-off philosophy. The grapes were hand-harvested and carefully fermented to preserve purity and vineyard character, with gentle extraction to maintain fine tannin structure. Maturation took place in French oak barrels, sensitively handled to complement the fruit rather than dominate it, before extended bottle ageing.

With nearly two decades of maturity, the wine now presents a beautifully developed bouquet of sour cherry, dried strawberry, and red plum, layered with tertiary notes of forest floor, dried leaves, mushroom, spice, and subtle cedar. The palate is medium-bodied and finely textured, showing resolved tannins, savoury complexity, and a long, gentle finish that speaks to balance and provenance rather than sheer intensity.
