The 2004 Tyrrell’s Vat 47 Chardonnay is a superbly matured expression of one of Australia’s most historic and influential Chardonnay labels. First bottled in 1971, Vat 47 helped redefine Australian Chardonnay, setting a benchmark for elegance, balance and site expression. The 2004 vintage, drawn from Tyrrell’s prized Hunter Valley vineyards, reflects both the legacy of the wine and the remarkable longevity achievable in great Hunter Chardonnay.
The 2004 growing season in the Hunter Valley was warm and dry, producing fruit of excellent ripeness and concentration while retaining the region’s hallmark acidity. Fermented and matured in French oak with extended lees contact, the wine was built with structure and balance — qualities that have allowed it to age gracefully for two decades.
With maturity, the bouquet has evolved beautifully. Aromas of baked lemon, yellow peach and nectarine are layered with notes of honey, toasted almond, cashew, brioche and subtle struck-match complexity. Secondary nuances of lanolin, warm spice and creamy oak reflect its extended bottle age.
On the palate, the 2004 Vat 47 is medium-bodied, rich yet finely composed. The once-vibrant citrus and stone fruit have softened into a harmonious blend of savoury, nutty and honeyed characters, supported by a line of fresh acidity that keeps the wine lively and focused. The texture is creamy and seamless, leading to a long, elegant and gently savoury finish.
