The 2002 Wendouree Shiraz Mataro is a rare and mature Clare Valley classic from one of Australia's most iconic cult wineries. Produced from historic dry-grown vineyards, this highly sought-after blend showcases the extraordinary ageing potential that has made Wendouree legendary among collectors and fine wine enthusiasts.
Founded in 1893, Wendouree remains one of Australia's most traditional wine estates, producing small quantities of highly allocated wines from old-vine vineyards planted on Clare Valley's distinctive ironstone-rich soils. The combination of old-vine Shiraz and Mataro has long been one of the estate's most celebrated expressions, offering both power and longevity.
The excellent 2002 vintage produced wines of outstanding balance, concentration, and structure throughout Clare Valley. More than two decades later, this wine has evolved into a beautifully complex and harmonious expression while retaining the core strength and integrity that define great Wendouree.
Traditional fermentation and maturation in French oak were employed to preserve vineyard character and enhance long-term development. Bottled under cork, the wine has matured gracefully, developing layers of tertiary complexity while maintaining freshness and structure.
The bouquet reveals an intricate mix of dried blackberry, plum, black cherry, and mulberry, intertwined with notes of leather, tobacco leaf, cedar, ironstone, dried herbs, earth, and exotic spice. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, with beautifully resolved tannins, savoury complexity, and remarkable persistence. The Mataro component contributes earthy depth, gamey nuances, and additional structure, complementing the mature Shiraz fruit perfectly.
