The 2001 Penfolds Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon is a beautifully matured and classically styled Australian Cabernet that reflects Penfolds’ mastery of multi-regional blending and long-term ageworthiness. First released in 1990, Bin 407 was created to showcase Cabernet Sauvignon with structure, depth and refinement, drawing inspiration from Bordeaux while expressing unmistakable Penfolds character. The 2001 vintage stands among the finest early releases of the label, now drinking superbly with more than two decades of graceful evolution.
The 2001 growing season across South Australia delivered excellent conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, producing fruit with ripe tannins, balanced acidity and strong varietal definition. Sourced from premium vineyards across regions such as Coonawarra, Padthaway, Wrattonbully and Barossa Valley, the blend was matured in seasoned American oak, allowing complexity to build without overshadowing the fruit.
With maturity, the bouquet has developed classic tertiary depth. Aromas of blackcurrant, dried cassis and plum are layered with cedar, cigar box, graphite and dried herbs. Subtle notes of leather, tobacco leaf, mocha and earthy spice reflect its extended bottle age and careful oak integration.
On the palate, the 2001 Bin 407 is medium to full-bodied, elegant and harmoniously structured. The tannins are finely resolved, framing flavours of mature dark fruit, black tea, cedar and savoury earth. A fresh line of acidity provides balance and lift, carrying the wine through a long, composed and gently tapering finish.
Now firmly in its prime, this wine offers a compelling snapshot of mature Penfolds Cabernet — refined, savoury and beautifully balanced, with continued potential under good cellaring conditions.
