Bin 28 offers a showcase of warm-climate Australian Shiraz – ripe, robust and generously flavoured. First made in 1959, Bin 28 is named after the famous Barossa Valley Kalimna Vineyard purchased by Penfolds in 1945 and from which the wine was originally sourced. Today, Bin 28 is a multi-region, multi-vineyard blend, with the Barossa Valley always well represented.
Black olive and chocolate notes resonate with an abundance of fruits, with mouth-coating sweet tannins and balanced acidity. Full and expansive - an immersion of flavour saturation and a textural continuum across the palate.
Critic tasting note: (2001 vintage) "Kalimna is a multi-region blend primarily sourced from the Barossa and Clare Valleys, McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek regions. Oz wine writing wizard James Halliday says "there is a good argument to be made that it should be Bin 28, rather than Bin 389, which is 'Poor Man's Grange'" because "the emphasis is on the same lush fruit; the oak used is second - and third - use American barrels handed down through the Grange and Bin 389 programmes." In 2001 look for expressive spicy, white pepper, smoky bacon, licorice, black berry jam aromas with a touch of black raspberry fruit. A rich, ripe, smooth entry with chocolate, sweet vanilla, peppery, black cherry jam and some smoky, meaty notes on the finish.
